Receding Hairline or Mature Hairline? How to Tell

Almost every man's hairline changes after his teens. The question is whether it has simply matured and settled, or whether it is still moving back as part of male pattern hair loss. Here is how to tell, and what your realistic options are.

Mature hairline or receding hairline?

A mature hairline rises a little, usually to about a finger's width above the top crease of your forehead, and then stays put. A receding hairline keeps moving, deepens at the temples into an M shape, and the hairs at the edge become finer and shorter.

Mature hairline Receding hairline
Movement Small change, then stable Keeps moving back
Shape Fairly even M shape with deeper temples
Hair at the edge Normal thickness Finer, wispy hairs
Crown Usually unchanged May also be thinning

How to track it

Take a photo of your hairline from the front and from each side once a month, with your hair pulled back, in the same light. Comparing photos several months apart shows whether it is still changing.

The Norwood scale

Doctors describe male pattern hair loss using the Norwood scale.

Stage What it looks like
1 No real recession
2 Slight recession at the temples, often a mature hairline
3 Deeper recession at the temples, where noticeable hair loss begins
3 vertex Stage 3 with thinning at the crown
4 Further recession and a thinning crown, separated by a band of hair
5 The band thins and both areas grow larger
6 The band disappears and the front and crown join
7 Hair remains only around the sides and back

What helps, honestly

The temples are one of the hardest areas to regrow. For most men, slowing further loss is a more realistic goal than rebuilding the original hairline.

Option Type Good to know
Minoxidil 5% for men Over-the-counter drug Labeled for hereditary hair loss on the top of the scalp. Men's Drug Facts labels state it is not intended for frontal baldness or a receding hairline, so it is the right choice if your crown is thinning too.
Finasteride Prescription Taken by mouth to slow pattern hair loss across the scalp. Discuss benefits and side effects with a doctor.
Hair transplant Procedure Can rebuild the hairline once hair loss is stable and there is enough donor hair.
Hairstyle changes Styling Shorter, textured cuts reduce the contrast at the temples.
Scalp micropigmentation Cosmetic A tattoo technique that mimics short stubble, often used with a shaved look.

If your temples are your main concern, a dermatologist can confirm the cause and talk you through prescription and procedural options. If your crown is thinning as well, see our crown thinning guide and FOLIGAIN minoxidil 5% for men.

Keeping your hair looking its best

TRIOXIDIL® shampoos and conditioners are made for thinning hair, designed to help hair look fuller and healthier. Many men use them as part of a daily routine.

Frequently asked questions

Can a receding hairline grow back?

Early changes can sometimes partly improve with treatment, but the temples are difficult to regrow. Preventing further loss is the more realistic aim.

When does a hairline start to recede?

Pattern hair loss can begin in the late teens or twenties, and it becomes more common with age.

When should I see a doctor?

See a doctor if loss is sudden or patchy, if your scalp is painful, red or scaly, or if you want to discuss prescription treatment or a transplant.
